What does this role do?
The Director serves as the Campus Landscape Architect and in this role, is the chief steward of the campus grounds and landscape ensuring that the Notre Dame campus reflects the tradition and beauty for which it enjoys its national reputation. On a daily basis, the Director may find themself designing the landscape for a new building or touring campus in search of safety, maintenance, or aesthetic appearance issues.
- Lead in the effort to create a safe working environment and culture within the teams they lead including knowing the IOSHA and environmental compliance requirements.
- Collaborate with Utilities and Maintenance team to identify and address storm water drainage issues throughout campus.
- Understand the safety and environmental compliance laws and regulations and ensure that the department staff is appropriately trained and follows these requirements.
- Establish, communicate, and periodically update a set of design standards that will guide the future development of the campus grounds and landscape using relevant sustainable design practices.
- Lead the development of and annually update thereafter a Campus Master Landscape Plan that describes the design and renewal goals for each section of the Notre Dame campus.
- Oversight of the daily care and maintenance of the campus athletics playing fields (both natural and artificial turf) and venues for varsity and recreational sports, including the set up and tear down of sports venues for Track and Field, Boxing, and Fencing.
- Identify a set of peer campuses and develop and track a series of benchmark metrics that measure the work and effectiveness of the Campus Grounds and Landscape team.
- Maintain a current inventory of all major landscape and grounds equipment.
- Develop and lead the campus hardscape renewal and replacement plan including the evaluation of asphalt, concrete, and brick pavements.
- Lead the design and execution of all campus landscape projects, from new building projects to the renewal of existing landscapes.
- Oversight of the campus grounds including the daily care and maintenance of: exterior campus signage, bike loops, benches, trash/recycling/ash s, driveways, roads, sidewalks, brick pavers, seat walls, retaining walls, fencing, gates (excl. parking lot gates), monument, sculptures, plaques, exterior ramps and stairs, railings, bollards, outdoor furniture, light poles, and other site features.
- Oversight of the daily care and maintenance of approximately 1,200 acres of campus grounds and landscape including the following activities performed by the Grounds and Landscape staff: turf mowing, tree trimming, flower planting, weeding and mulching of planting beds, shrub trimming, irrigation, pest control, fertilizing, ice prevention, and snow removal.

- 5+ years grounds experience
- 3+ years leading a large team

- Equipment knowledge
